We got the down-low on the singer’s new streetwear-inspired collection.

Let’s be real: Tinashe deserves to be on your style moodboard. As an independent R&B force, she’s consistently delivered hypnotic vocals, next-level choreography and a style that perfectly blends Y2K nostalgia with slick athleisure.  So, when she announced her first-ever fashion collection, “1st Position,” with Urban Outfitters, it felt like a natural next step. Hypebae had to get the inside scoop and jumped at the opportunity to meet the “Nasty Girl” singer in the flesh at Urban Outfitters HQ to talk about her collection, the creative process behind it and her style.

The name of the 15-piece collection itself is a perfect nod to her roots. For anyone who’s ever taken a dance class, “first position” is where it all begins: the foundation, the starting point. “1st Position is a dance and streetwear-inspired collection that effortlessly blends function with creativity,” she explains. “There’s deconstructed elements to accentuate movement. I wanted to curate a line of pieces that are comfortable, durable and most importantly give you the ability to express your individuality.” And it’s true: this isn’t just another merch drop, it’s like she’s finally letting us all raid her closet, and we are so ready for it.

Tinashe was hands-on from start to finish, making sure every piece felt both “practical and authentic.” Forget basic sports bras and plain leggings. This is dance-inspired fashion that’s actually stylish. “I feel like it incorporates the essence of what hip hop and fashion are: expression and functionality,” she explains. It’s a collection you can actually live in without ever sacrificing your look.

So, what makes it so quintessentially Tinashe? It’s all in the details. Her signature style hacks are literally built right into the clothes. We all know her go-to move of layering a bikini top under almost every outfit. It started as a stage-style staple and has now become a key element of the collection, with pieces designed to be layered. Then there’s the genius convertible T-shirt. Tinashe spoke openly about customizing her tops for shows; tucking them under her bra, tying them up, or cropping them on the fly. This tee has built-in strings and a clever cut, so you can style it a dozen different ways: fully cropped, boxy, off-the-shoulder… you name it. There’s even a luxe Durag Headwrap Gift Set in satin and velvet.

Ultimately, the collection is a call to embrace your own unique style. Tinashe’s number one tip? “Be unafraid.” She encourages experimenting and taking risks to discover what makes you feel powerful. “It’s not always about playing it safe,” she says. The collection champions remixing pieces in unexpected ways, too. Think a going-out top with basketball shorts or a hoodie with knee-high boots. “1st Position” isn’t just about the clothes; it’s about stepping into your confidence and owning your movement.

The collection will be available in select stores and via the Urban Outfitters website from October 16.

Can’t get enough of Tinashe? Here she talks about reaching mainstream success.
