The Internet Has Mixed Feelings About the Faux Freckle Trend
Commenters have a lot to say about the makeup look.
Faux freckles have become a popular beauty trend on TikTok for adding dimension to the skin and providing that effortlessly sunkissed look. On the platform, beauty fans share their favorite products for achieving freckles, along with tips on getting them to look as natural as possible. But like tons of other TikTok beauty trends, faux freckles have become especially controversial — leading to a widespread debate about the ethics of using makeup to draw on freckles.
Beauty trends online are often subject to scrutiny, but the faux freckle trend in particular has become synonymous with disapproving comments. Some users on the app claim to have been bullied for their natural freckles and therefore deem faux freckles as insensitive. “Bullied for freckles my whole childhood and now everyone wants them,” one commenter writes.

Recently, faux freckle products have been all over TikTok, but it’s hard to find a single video that hasn’t attracted similar comments. While some creators have attempted to shut down the critique altogether, the debate still hasn’t died down. In response to the disapproval, a few TikTokers have went on to deny that freckles have ever been a target for bullying, while others claim that these experiences don’t negate the fact that people have always seen freckles as beautiful.

On the other hand, a few critics of the trend simply claim that faux freckles aren’t flattering. One user posted a video of Huda Mustafa from Love Island USA, with the caption, “Can we please stop with the fake looking freckles?” However, commenters under the video widely disagree with the sentiment, as the reality TV star’s look has become a big source of inspiration on the platform. Even though the beauty trend has been widely debated, faux freckles show no signs of slowing down on TikTok.
