Do You Have High or Low Visual Weight?

TikTok says knowing the answer is key to unlocking the most flattering makeup for your features.

If you’ve ever wondered why a celebrity’s signature makeup look doesn’t quite suit you, it’s probably because you haven’t mastered your own visual weight — or at least, that’s what TikTok is preaching. Harping on the popularity of hyper-specific makeup routines, finding your visual weight is the latest trend that promises to reveal the most flattering glam for your unique facial features.

Visual weight describes how prominent your facial features are, which beauty fans say plays a big role in determining the kind of makeup that’s most flattering. High visual weight means larger or more prominent features — which can be attributed to multiple large facial features or one especially striking feature. On the other hand, low visual weight typically means smaller or less prominent features which sometimes result in a more proportional look overall.

Although some faces fall somewhere in the middle, identifying whether you lean more high or low visual weight can speak to the beauty details that will complement your face the best. Think of it as the amount of makeup your face can “carry” — while bold makeup on low visual weight can overwhelm softer features, it’s actually said to suit the striking contours of high visual weight.

It’s not exactly a hard and fast rule, but the general consensus is that people with bigger features or higher visual weight suit bold beauty details like dark lips, smokey eye makeup and arched brows. Conversely, low visual weight, which is categorized by smaller features and therefore more face space, tends to look best with muted color palettes and softer eye looks.
