Why Is the "Turning Myself Into an LA 10" Trend Attracting So Many Hate Comments?

The makeup trend is receiving tons of negative attention on TikTok.

In the U.S., beauty trends vary from place to place. While someone might consider an “LA 10” to have chiseled cheek bones and smokey eye makeup like Bella Hadid, a “Utah 10” is more synonymous with beach waves and bronzed skin. Regardless of where you live, you’ve probably noticed the growing number of TikTokers attempting to turn themselves in to “10’s” from various states with hair and makeup. Although it’s seemingly innocent in nature, the trend has sparked a larger debate about the harmful effects of strict beauty standards.

The “turning myself into a 10” TikTok format consists of lip syncing to Foxy Brown’s “Candy” bare-faced before transitioning to a makeup look that embodies a state’s signature beauty aesthetic. While creators are using the trend to experiment with new makeup techniques or curate beauty looks based on their hometowns, internet trolls have began to flood people’s comment sections with harsh criticism about their looks and physical features.

Although the makeup trend doesn’t directly attempt to further solidify beauty standards nor does it aim to debunk them, commenters believe it gives them free range to openly discuss the attractiveness of the creators behind the videos. On the other hand, the trend has received an equal amount of criticism from users that believe the beauty looks represented are inaccurate or only apply to a certain demographic of people.

On TikTok, commenters are known for being especially harsh — but the trend at hand has become another way for faceless accounts to spew hate or give unsolicited advice about appeasing men. “Every video is just a bunch of men giving their thoughts on makeup. Lads, she doesn’t care. No woman cares what your dusty ahh thinks about her makeup,” one commenter writes.

Like most TikTok beauty trends, the original intent can quickly become skewed when the videos reach a wider audience outside of the target demographic. For this reason, creators claiming to be a “10” in any capacity has turned into a highly controversial statement that trolls are quick to pick apart.
