Mariah the Scientist Makes a Case for Cadet Couture
With an appearance from a ‘Love Island: USA’ cast member…
Before she was Mariah the Scientist, she was allegedly @selkcub on Instagram, a fashion account. From her to-die-for shoe closet to her album rollout looks, R&B singer Mariah the Scientist is taking it with her cadet couture-coded moments.

After the success of her single “Burning Blue” and “Is It a Crime” with Kali Uchis, it became clear the Atlanta-born singer’s upcoming album was one to watch. As she promotes her new album, Hearts Sold Separately, we can’t help but add each of her looks to our saved folder. Turns out, she periodically works with stylist Jaclyn Fleurant, but for the most part, she’s leading her best fashion pulls.

For her album cover, her styling team tapped SEKS.LLC, to create a custom toy soldier fit for the Hearts Sold Separately cover. She paired the look with archival Louis Vuitton 2011 platform boots, first seen on the runway. Oh, and a few months before that, she wore Balenciaga’s Gladiator Boots to Young Thug’s Sp5der pop-up in NYC. Designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, the collection was criticized for not being wearable, but that didn’t stop the Scientist from popping out in them.

Back to the album – the album trailer continues the toy soldier and military theme with a special runway look by Junya Watanabe. Styled by Fleurant again, she dressed the R&B singer in a Fall/Winter 2006 deconstructed two-piece. Elsewhere, she wore a one-piece with a cone bra and a military dog tag. Little did we know, cone bras were about to become a recurring theme.
Shortly after, she arrived at the 2025 Billboard Women in Music Awards in a green cone bra dress. The moment was the perfect example of Mariah’s style, because even if the look is simple, she’ll subvert it with a bold element like a heel or, in this case, a cone bra.
Stay tuned for the album release on Friday, August 22.
