The FDA Just Gave Us a Major Warning About Mousse Sunscreen
SPF products from Vacation and Supergoop! have been issued warning letters.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, mousse sunscreen like Vacation’s Classic Whip SPF 50 and Supergoop!’s PLAY Body Mousse SPF 50 have not been cleared as effective forms of sun protection. As a result, both brands have been issued a warning letter. “Beware of sunscreen products in mousse form because they might not be effective,” the FDA says in an X post.
While the FDA determines that oil, lotion, cream, gel, butter, paste, ointment, stick, spray and powder products are exempt from filing an application in order to be marketed as sunscreen — mousse SPF isn’t included and must be granted permission by the FDA. The administration reports that both Vacation and Supergoop! are in violation of this rule, and have been given 15 days to address the violations.
@ava.perki god forbid a girl applies fun sunscreen😭 lesson to all brands: if you’re selling OTC, check the monograph!! i’m curious to see what the next steps will be. i assume these will be voluntarily recalled by the brands. #cosmeticchemist #cosmeticscience #sunscreen #supergoop #vacation #greenscreen ♬ original sound – Ava | Cosmetic Chemist
Beyond that, the FDA warns that Vacation’s Classic Whip SPF 50 can also be harmful to consumers because its packaging closely resembles whipped cream — which might lead consumers to believe it’s edible. The vintage-inspired brand has become known for its unique approach to sunscreen thanks to the Classic Whip, and quickly became a hot topic of discussion among beauty fans after its initial release in 2021.
Additionally, three other brands Kalani Sunwear, Botao Baby and Tizo Skin have also been issued warning letters for mousse sunscreen. If the five brands affected do not resolve the issues with the FDA, the products in question could be taken off the market.
In response to the letter, Supergoop! tells Hypebae, “At Supergoop! we remain committed to innovation in sun care and the highest standards of product efficacy and safety. The recent communication from the FDA regarding our PLAY SPF 50 Body Mousse is focused on product labeling and has nothing to do with its safety, effectiveness, or formula. We are working closely with the FDA to resolve this matter as we continue to uphold the high standards our consumers expect from us.”
