Faux Tan Lines and Sunburns: Chic or Dangerous?

TikTokers have been using makeup to fake sun damage, and the internet has a lot to say about it.

In 2025, it’s practically taboo to leave the house without sunscreen on. Thanks to our skincare obsession, we’ve become hyper-aware of premature aging — which is why SPF is now considered a non-negotiable in our routines. Yet, in direct opposition of our desire to look young forever, TikTok has developed an affinity for using makeup to create faux Y2K-esque tan lines.

As strange as it may seem, the sunburn trend is far from new. While its already made appearances in countless runway shows and editorial shoots, celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter and Addison Rae have also co-signed the look. Whether it’s accomplished with blush or spray tan, there’s a big emphasis on getting the look without actually damaging your skin.

Even though the trend only mimics the look of sunburns, it’s still been met with a fair share of controversy online. Aside from commenters that claim they try their best to avoid tan lines at all costs, others have called into question whether or not it’s harmful to promote sunburns — considering real ones can be especially hazardous to our skin’s health.

On the other hand, harmful tanning practices have seemingly always existed on TikTok. Although most of the platform outwardly rejects things like applying oil to your skin to maximize tanning results, there’s still a handful of creators that subscribe to similar methods — and beyond that, proudly post it for the world to see.

As long as there’s a sun to bathe in, there will always be the risk of skin damage. While we can’t always control the harmful things that are shared online, we can prioritize our own safety and not buy in to every trend we see — especially if it means potentially damaging our skin forever. But, if the sunburnt look is still calling out to you — faux is the way to go.
