This Product Makes It Easier Than Ever to Wear Makeup Over a Breakout
Our honest review of Hero Cosmetics’ Mighty Shield.
We all know what it’s like to have plans wrecked by acne. Some days, you just want to put on a full face of glam and look your best — but of course, pimples find a way to ruin practically every makeup look. While my acne has definitely settled down in my adulthood, there’s still nothing more stressful than waking up with a breakout before a big event.
While cutesy pimple patches often provide a short-term solution to covering up blemishes, they’re still a major declaration that you’re dealing with skin problems. When it comes to covering up spots with makeup, application can be messy and applying product directly on top of them can make the problem even worse. Thankfully, Hero Cosmetics launched an innovative liquid pimple patch that claims to dry down and be undetectable under makeup.

Why The Hype?
As a beauty fan, I haven’t found many effective solutions for concealing pimples with makeup. Not only does the Mighty Patch claim to prevent further irritation, it also promises to look invisible under your usual face products. While traditional pimple patches are far too bulky to be worn under makeup, I’ve also discovered that layering foundation on top of a pimple is pretty much an impossible task, especially when you’re in a rush in the morning. On the other hand, Mighty Patch is seemingly easy-to-use — it dries down quickly and can be easily peeled off at the end of the day.
How To Use
Understandably, a product as innovative as the Mighty Patch comes with a bit of a learning curve. The product comes in a squeeze tube bottle, which means accidentally dispensing too much product is pretty much a given. According to Hero Cosmetics, all you need is a small drop, and I learned through trial and error that it’s better to apply a thin layer than try and blend out an excessive amount. The formula itself is quite goopy in consistency, so I landed on squeezing a tiny amount out and spreading a thin layer over my spot with the applicator.
I recommend applying the product as soon as you can, as the brand says it takes around 60 seconds to fully dry down — although, I usually wait a bit longer just to be extra sure. After it’s completely dried down, I apply my concealer to the rest of my face as normal, lightly blotting with a brush when I reach the spot I used Mighty Shield on. Naturally, it took me longer than normal to blend out my concealer over the patch, but once it was to my liking I set my hard work in place with some loose setting powder. To remove, simply peel off the film before washing away the rest of your makeup.
An Honest Review
While Mighty Shield sounds straightforward on paper, it definitely requires a bit of practice to fully nail. The sticky texture can make application difficult, so it’s best to use the applicator tip rather than your fingers or a brush. Because of this, after my first use I wasn’t fully convinced. I noticed that the protective film left my skin with a strange texture, but after continued use I realized less product is the best way to prevent that.
For me, the most noticeable flaw was how Mighty Patch felt on my skin. Once it dried down, the feeling of film on top of my skin was extremely noticeable. As for sticker pimple patches, I usually forget that I’m wearing them after a couple hours, but I could still detect Mighty Patch throughout the day. While this doesn’t immediately disqualify it for me, it does play a big part in whether or not I reach for it.
The Final Verdict
If you’ve been grappling with ways to mask acne, Mighty Shield is worth trying out. It requires a fair amount of practice and can feel a bit heavy on the skin, but it’s far better than not shielding your pimple and using makeup on its own. For me, I see it as an efficient way to protect pimples on days I’m really wanting to wear a full face of makeup. On more chill days, I usually just settle on a normal pimple patch to power through a breakout.
