Disney's 'Little Mermaid' Live-Action Movie Finally Gets Its Prince Eric
Jonah Hauer-King will be playing the role of Ariel’s love interest.
After shutting down rumors of Harry Styles being cast in Disney‘s The Little Mermaid live-action remake, The Hollywood Reporter has finally confirmed the actor who will be playing Prince Eric. Newcomer Jonah Hauer-King has been officially cast as Ariel’s (played by Halle Bailey) love interest.
The final decision came down to Hauer-King and Cameron Cuffe, the star of DC’s Syfy series Krypton. The London-based actor has been previously seen on A Dog’s Way Home that premiered earlier this year, and BBC’s adaptation of Little Women in 2017. He also currently stars on the BBC war drama World on Fire.
With the main cast now complete, The Hollywood Reporter estimates that production for The Little Mermaid will commence in early 2020.
Back in July, Halle Bailey was announced as the movie’s main character, Ariel. Unfortunately, the casting was faced with a backlash online, with the hashtag #NotMyAriel becoming a trending topic on Twitter. Some fans of the original 1989 animated film expressed their disappointment towards the casting and argued that Bailey’s appearance does not resemble Ariel’s red hair and fair skin.
In other entertainment news, Nickelodeon and Netflix have recently signed a deal to produce new animated shows.
