Here's Why Every Cool Girl Is Getting a "Step Mullet" Haircut
Mullets, but make it fashion.
From trying a new hair color to bob and pixie cuts, summer is all about fresh hairstyles. The newest hair trend on our radar is a major throwback to the ’80s. Coined the “step mullet” by New York hair salon Vacancy Project in a recent Teen Vogue article, the hair style is a modernized version of the original rockstar mullet.
According to Masami Hosono, the Creative Director of Vacancy Project:
“It’s very interesting because mostly hair trends come from 60-80s but I feel like Step Mullet is a 00’s thing. I really think it comes from people who cut their own hair… Kind of accident-based, DIY, just chopped your step with kitchen scissors.”
Rather than being a party in the front, business in the back, it’s more of a dinner party in the front. The hairstyle features a blunt chop in the front, around cheekbone area length, that can be worn with or without bangs and longer hair in the back. Whether you have curly or straight hair, the well-balanced cut flatters the face frame with either wisps of textured locks or angles that give an edgier look.
