TikTokers Are Using Blow Dryers To Curl Their Eyelashes
The viral alternative to the standard eyelash curler is potentially dangerous.
Blow dryers may soon serve a dual purpose as TikTok users have sworn by the hair tool to give them fluttery eyelashes. TikTok user @sophiamasterson showed off her questionable DIY method last month. After applying lash primer and mascara, she dried her lashes on the cool setting for a total of four times.
While Masterson claims the technique ultimately saves her time, energy and money, there is still the risk for potential damage to the eye. “This could cause significant dryness and even corneal abrasions, which can cause infection, pain, and even loss of vision,” says Ashley Brissette, M.D., an ophthalmologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, in an interview with Allure.
New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Dendy Engelman, M.D., adds that “if hot air is used, the eyelids or lashes could even get burned.”
Brissette and Engelman both advise using heated eyelash curlers rather than blow dryers if you’re desparate for full voluminous lashes. “The heated [eyelash curlers] have safety settings that don’t go beyond a specific temperature and (when used with caution) can give you the same lifted eyelash effect but in a safer way,” Brissette explains.
