FIFA Announces Women's Club World Cup Competition

Along with a new Futsal Women’s World Cup.

With the men’s 2022 World Cup wrapping up, FIFA has announced that a new Women’s World Cup competition is coming in an effort to boost women’s football.

Prior to the nail-biting France v. Argentina game in Qatar on December 18, FIFA president Gianni Infantino shared that in addition to an expanded 32-team men’s tournament, the first-ever women’s competition is in the works. Another women’s tournament added to the calendar is the new Futsal Women’s World Cup.

The news comes after Infantino said in 2019 after the Women’s World Cup that FIFA was hoping to launch a women’s Club World Cup “as soon as possible.” While details for the tournament have yet to be finalized, the president noted that “consultation with the relevant stakeholders” will take place soon and that “players’ health and well-being” will be prioritized.

The men’s Club World Cup has been around since 2000, with seven participating teams from six different confederations. It’s unclear what the structure will look like for the women’s edition, although teams from the USA’s National Women’s Soccer League will play against England’s Women’s Super League for the first time.
