Sports Meets Craftsmanship in Matthew M. Williams' Givenchy FW22 Collection
The designer combines American and Parisian influences in his latest show.
Matthew M. Williams continues his tenure at Givenchy with a combined women’s and menswear presentation for the Fall/Winter 2022 season.
The show, which took place on a futuristic, transparent stage, featured an unconventional mix of opposites. “I really wanted to create a synthesis of powerful, sophisticated femininity, with an interplay of multiple American and Parisian influences, sports and craftsmanship. Next to her stands a contemporary man with an instinct for chic nonchalance. On the runway, both are grounded by a sense of reality,” Williams explained in the show’s notes. He combined haute couture with ready-to-wear, luxury with utility and wearable with ornamental.
The show opened with a tailored jacket worn atop a graphic tee, along with leather stretch boots. The logo graphics, reminiscent of metal band merch, were further seen on sweatshirts and tank tops. Layering was one of the key themes seen throughout the collection, with lengthy outerwear and cropped tops dominating the range. While the runway featured mostly dark-colored looks, Williams added splashes of yellow, blue and more to dresses paired with colored boots.
Elsewhere, Williams looked to Givenchy’s archives, applying details from couture collections to the ready-to-wear fits. Pearls were added to an evening gown, jeans and tops, and also appeared as oversized necklaces to accompany streetwear looks. The garments were styled with accessories such as the New Hobo bag, new iterations of the Kenny bag and more. In footwear, Williams debuted the TK 360 sneaker, a knitted design teased ahead of the show.
