Grimes Reveals She Has a Second Child With Elon Musk
They secretly welcomed their daughter via surrogate last year.
Grimes and Elon Musk secretly welcomed a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl, nicknamed Y, through a surrogate in December 2021. Additionally, the singer and the entrepreneur share a son, X Æ A-Xii, whom was born in May 2020.
Grimes revealed to Vanity Fair the meaning of her daughter’s name, saying that Exa refers to a supercomputing term, exaFLOPS. Meanwhile, Dark represents the unknown. “People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,” she told the outlet. Lastly, Sideræl, pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el,” is what Grimes considers a more “elven” spelling of sidereal; she defines it as “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.”
The Canadian musician also commented on the current status of her relationship with Musk. The two split in September 2021 but have gotten back together. “There’s no real word for it,” Grimes explained. “I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid. We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time … We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”
