FX has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming docuseries Dear Mama about the relationship between Tupac and his activist mom, Afeni Shakur.
In the video, a voiceover is heard talking about Tupac’s upbringing. “It was my responsibility to teach Tupac how to survive his reality,” says the voice. “So Tupac do something wrong, take your little sorry self in that corner, get The New York Times and let’s have a debate about it. Not a discussion, a debate. Let me hear what your idea is, stand up, defend it.”
The title of the docuseries is inspired by the late rapper’s track of the same name. “Dear Mama” was a song Tupac released in 1995 — one year before his death — and it details how much his mom means to him. In it, he raps, “You always was committed/ A poor single mother on welfare, tell me how you did it/ There’s no way I can pay you back/ But the plan is to show you that I understand/ You are appreciated.”
According to FX, the doscuseries is “told through the eyes of the people who knew them best.”
Dear Mama is slated to premiere on FX this fall and will be available to stream on Hulu the following day. Watch the teaser trailer above.
