Ncuti Gatwa Is the Newest Star of 'Doctor Who'
Gatwa is the series’ first-ever Black doctor.
Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa is confirmed to be the newest doctor on BBC’s Doctor Who series. The news was announced ahead of the 2022 BAFTAs, which took place last night in London.
Gatwa is the first Black man to take on the role of the doctor, taking over from Jodie Whittaker who played the 13th Time Lord in the series. ”There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my utmost to do the same,” the actor shared in a press release.
According to series show-runner Russell T Davies, “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him.”
The new series of Doctor Who starring Gatwa will air in 2023. While you’re here, check out the full list of winners from this year’s BAFTA TV awards.
