Lofi Girl's 2-Year-Long Music Stream Stopped Due to "False" Copyright Claims
Two radio streams, which had a runtime of about 20,000 hours each, are no longer available.
Lofi Girl, the YouTube channel streaming all kinds of lofi beats and tunes for studying and relaxing, was forced to stop its two-year-long stream due to a “false” copyright strike.
The channel, boasting more than 10.7 million subscribers with over 668 million views on its “lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to” stream, has been one of the most popular destinations for listening to calming music to help with productivity. Over the years, the platform has built a strong community of followers who would use the stream’s anonymous chat to support one another. Lofi Girl’s fanbase has since expanded to Reddit and Discord, with more than 700,000 members on the latter.
According to a statement from Lofi Records, two lofi radio streams were taken down due to false copyright claims from Malaysian company FMC Music Sdn Bhd Malaysia. The representative emphasized that in addition to the YouTube channel, Lofi runs a record label and animation studio, thus owning “100% of the rights to share and promote the music and artworks” available on the channel.
Social media users have since used the hashtag #BringBackLofiGirl to support the Lofi Girl channel. YouTube responded on Twitter, confirming “the takedown requests were abusive & terminated the claimants account,” and adding that it may take 24 to 48 hours for the streams to be back online.
