Survey Reveals Gen Z Is Fed up With Sh-tty Sex Ed — Were You Overlooked Too?
Highlighting “trends” sex ed should adopt.
College student discount app, StudentBeans, conducted a survey amongst its users, to determine how they felt within their sex and dating lives.
Most assume the issue with sex education is female pleasure, as that is a glaring issue that affects most of the world. However, what about those who aren’t cis women? According to the study, 39% of Gen Z did not feel represented in the sex education they received at school, while 33% were indifferent. In another one of its surveys, 89% did not see LGBTQ+ themes within their education.
There are several demographics left without the tools needed to explore sexuality — let alone have orgasms, and elevate them, which the media is obsessed with.
If you’re curious about sex ed, here’s what Gen Z actually gives a f-ck about.
Safe lesbian sex
Many assume the biggest issue with queer sex being excluded from mainstream sex ed is minute issues like how to successfully scissor — if you choose that life. But actually, how to even have safe sex is the first struggle, shared undergrad student Lottie Henderson. Without this information.
University of Surrey student Abigail Nash continued, “I didn’t know a female condom existed until after I’d left school and I can’t say I even know now 100% how to use one… The more openly we can talk about these topics, the more comfortable young people will feel about figuring out and coming to terms with their sexuality and children will learn to be more understanding adults.”
Sex as a disabled person
Nothing is worse than shopping for or inquiring about sex-positivity for limited abilities — when everything screams medical, or frankly, just ugly. These moments send the message that people with disabilities aren’t prioritized. Post-graduate student Bee shared, “I feel like schools should teach more about the experiences of marginalized people: from BIPOC , to disabled people, to LGBTQ+ individuals, to fat folks etc. We should talk about all the different forms of sex and relationships… We should be taught that sex and relationships are not one size fits all.”
All LGBTQ+ labels
As asexual TikTok influencer, Nic shared: “If someone had explained the spectrum of asexuality to me when I was learning about sex, it would have saved me a lot of self-torment.” Without sharing information on the full spectrum of sexuality, many of us are using inaccurate or information that doesn’t even apply, to aid us through our journeys of self discovery. What a waste of our youth.
