Hampton Boyer Brings an Embellished View of the African American Diaspora to OMNI Gallery
Focusing on the Black body and the space in which it occupies.
OMNI, a London-based gallery showcasing the work of multidisciplinary modern and contemporary creatives, presents, for the first time, the latest body of work by American visual artist Hampton Boyer. Titled “Memory Dances,” the exhibition showcases an embellished view of the African American diaspora. The large-scale figurative paintings, made up of layers of bright colors, geometric forms, and complex textures, offer a visually-arresting view and feeling of escapism.
At the core, “Memory Dances” is a personal reflection of Boyer’s journey as an artist and his cultural heritage as a Black American raised in the southeastern region of Virginia. The themes and symbols found across the room are mostly referenced from Boyer’s photo studies, while others derive directly from his subconscious. The self-taught artist’s interpretation of history and experience colored in both pain, pride and beauty are not one to miss.
The exhibition arrives soon after Boyer collaborated with musician Matthew E. White on “Only in America,” a critically-acclaimed video exploring police brutality, white supremacy and systematic racism in the USA. Memory Dances will be on display at OMNI Gallery until February 25.
