Sotheby's Hong Kong Is Auctioning Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Room and Bronze Pumpkin

In celebration of its 50th anniversary in Asia.

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, whose transcendental work evokes emotion, fragility, freedom and perception, is perhaps one of the world’s favorite artists to date. Celebrated as an unrivaled figure in contemporary art, Kusama’s symbolic objects and hypnotic motives, which embrace reflection, polka dots and pumpkins, draw enormous crowds wherever they are displayed.

At age 94, Kusama is still taking over the world, from reuniting with Louis Vuitton after ten years for the sequel of their iconic collaboration to exhibiting her largest retrospective outside of Japan at Hong Kong’s M+ Museum. Auction house Sotheby’s, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Asia, also has plans to deliver a testament to her enduring legacy by showcasing two pieces from her widely celebrated oeuvre at the LANDMARK shopping mall in Hong Kong.

The selected artworks are Pumpkin (L), a rare example of the artist’s highly coveted sculptural pumpkins, and My Heart is Flying to the Universe, one of her iconic Infinity Mirror Rooms that allow one to glimpse into infinity. Towering over two meters in height, the pieces are on view until March 26. They will then be transferred to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on April 1, ahead of Sotheby’s Evening Auction on April 5.

Additional works by Kusama, such as the paintings A-Pumpkin, Infinity Nets, Soul, Bird, Pumpkin, A Gill, Infinity Nets and “D” Flower, will also be offered in Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day sales in Hong Kong this spring. Take a look at the exclusive artworks in the gallery above.

In case you missed it, women artists are taking center stage at Sotheby’s London.
