Minka Kelly Opens up About "Toxic" Relationship With Taylor Kitsch

The actor details her journey in her upcoming memoir.

Friday Night Lights and Euphoria star Minka Kelly details dating her onscreen romance and frequenting strip clubs with her mother.

“All the effort I might have invested in connecting consistently with the girls on the show went to Taylor [Kitsch]” Kelly dreadfully recalled. According to her, she was warned by the Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg to avoid the romance but chose to follow her heart. “I think that relationship taught me to not have on-set romances,” says Kelly. “But you have to learn it for yourself.”

As the relationship grew toxic, it negatively impacted the entire cast and filming experience. “Life became very difficult both on and off set whenever we broke up,” she said. “We were young and had very few tools to handle our emotions and personal grievances… On the days we had to work together and were broken up, he didn’t want to be in the hair and makeup trailer at the same time I was… So when my relationship with Taylor became toxic, I had no one to turn to.”

“We couldn’t ride in the van together from base camp to set for the same reason. On those days, the tension on set was high and everyone felt the awkwardness.” Kelly’s experience onset was “tense” and considering it was her first LA gig after relocating due to abortion and coerced sex tape, the trauma was piling on.

She also detailed her childhood, often attending the Crazy Girl Strip Club in Los Angeles with her mother who was an exotic dancer. “If she made a lot of money that night, we’d go grocery shopping at 2 am, Kelly recalled.  ”My childhood was colorful and chaotic, unstable and inconsistent, unpredictable and hard a lot of the time. But the silver lining is that it made me a very adaptable person.” Her mother eventually passed from cancer in 2008.

Via her memoir, Kelly recalls the best lesson she learned from toxic romances and a tumultuous childhood: “My tough-guy approach only left me alone,” Kelly confessed. “If you behave as if you need no one, if no one around you knows any better, most certainly, no one will, in fact, be there.”

In other news, Natasha Lyonne is “raw dogging” life.
