Oceangate and Titanic Tied in Tragically Twisted Love Story
The wild story continues to unfold.
If you’ve missed the news, five millionaires were stuck in a lost submarine, after hoping to view missing Titanic remains — thousands of feet underwater. Unfortunately, the mission failed and the US Coast Guard announced on June 22 that the ship imploded “tragically.” On another twisted note, the Titan submersible is tied to the Titanic in an eery love story.
According to the NY Times, “Wendy Rush, the wife of Stockton Rush, the OceanGate chief executive who was piloting the submersible that disappeared Sunday… is a descendant of two first-class passengers who died when the ocean liner sank in 1912, archival records show.”
In fact, in a strange stroke of fate, the wife’s great-great-grandparents who were on board the Titanic – were “two of the wealthiest people aboard” its first voyage. Her late great-great-grandfather was the co-foudner of a Macy’s department store.
Although they were the wealthiest, their love story ended quite tragically. When the Titanic began to sink, Isidor Strauss, Wendy Rush’s great-great-grandfather refused to use the life raft saving women and children onboard. As a result, his wife Ida refused to leave him behind, causing them to both die together. Their bodies were never found.
Unfortunately, on June 22 the US Coast Guard confirmed the Titan ship “tragically” imploded leaving all passengers deceased.
