Elon Musk Launches New xAI Startup After Criticizing AI

To “understand the true nature of the universe.”

After slamming AI for posing “profound risks to society and humanity,” Elon Musk has announced the launch of his own artificial intelligence startup, xAI.

According to the platform’s website, its intent is to better “understand the true nature of the universe.” While the billionaire is known for having multiple ventures, his latest pursuit comes as a bit of a surprise. Four months prior, Musk, in addition to a thousand other signatories, signed an open letter, urging for AI experiments to come to a halt out of an alleged concern for our collective well-being. One month following the letter, Musk reportedly purchased several GPU units. For those who have not been following Musk’s career trajectory closely, the former Twitter CEO helped co-found OpenAI, which naturally become xAI’s competitor.

Musk has already begun to hire as his team is so far comprised of Jimmy Ba, an esteemed assistant professor from the University of Toronto, who studied under esteemed AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton aka the “Godfather of AI.” Christian Szegedy, a former Google research scientist and Toby Pohlen, who was previously with Google DeepMind are also joining xAI.

Stay tuned for more updates.
