Balenciaga Goes (Really) Big for Spring 2025
Oversized silhouettes and exaggerated proportions return as Demna revisits his roots.
Balenciaga presented its Spring 2025 show in Shanghai this week and as always, all eyes were on Demna to see what he would do next. Season after season, his poignant quote about the desire to “make quality clothes — not making image or buzz” returns, and each time the response to the collection ends up being relatively divisive.
Spring 2025 was no different, presenting a slew of oversized Balenciaga signatures and experimental silhouettes alongside a homage to Cristobal’s elegant eveningwear legacy. Drawing inspiration from its locale, the show was held outside at the Museum of Art Pudong and featured a range of “super-elongated, vertical silhouettes” inspired by Shanghai Pudong high-rises.

Alongside its exaggerated proportions, extremely oversized sneakers and tactile evening gowns, the collection debuted new collaborations with athletics brand Under Armour and Alipay — the latter of which arrived as a collaborative T-shirt design. Accessories and footwear included a crafted-from-leather sneaker box clutch, over-the-knee sock boots and trouser belt buckle chain bags, continuing Demna’s fashionable exploration of the everyday.
