This New Series from Rupal Banerjee Explores Western Style Through a South Asian Lens
Captured by Simrah Farrukh, “Rewoven” celebrates identity and belonging.
Los Angeles-based designer Rupal Banerjee just launched a new project in collaboration with American-Pakistani photographer and artist, Simrah Farrukh. United by their shared love of craftsmanship and heritage, the duo teamed up for a new photo series titled “Rewoven: Threads of Origin.”
The result of two artists “returning to the roots of their craft,” the series celebrates themes of “softness, grounding and intention,” offering a renewed commitment for both creatives. For Farrukh, the series offered an opportunity to reconnect with her passion and remind herself of why she started in photography in the first place.
For Banerjee, “Rewoven” was a chance to showcase a new era of Western style, one rooted in South Asian perspectives and design language. The pieces captured aim to explore traditional South Asian motifs through a modern lens, echoing the designer’s own principles.
The photo series was lensed in Los Angeles by Farrukh, starring model Sanjula Amaya. Capturing the city landscape and its vibrant tones, the series showcases Banerjee’s designs against a vibrant mural and breezy palm trees, evoking a sense of belonging.
“At its core, Rewoven: Threads of Origin bridges fashion and photography to honor identity, culture, and evolution — capturing the quiet strength of womanhood in its most authentic form,” explain Banerjee and Farrukh.
