KATSEYE Hilariously Responds to "Gnarly" Feedback

“Boba tea (Gnarly)… Tesla (Gnarly)… Fried chicken (Gnarly).”

K-pop girl group KATSEYE releases their new single “Gnarly” with a music video.

Following the success of their SIS (Soft Is Strong) EP, the girl group switches up their sound. The song debuts a trap-style intro with the six member group chiming in with: “Boba tea (Gnarly)… Tesla (Gnarly)… Fried chicken (Gnarly)… Partyin’ in the Hollywood Hills (Ugh)… This song (Gnarly)… Oh, my God, that new beat (Gnarly, fucking gnarly)… Oh, my God, is this real?”

The first of its kind, KATSEYE taps the talent of K-pop idols with no rules to creativity — the perfect recipe for genre-defying music. In the press release, the girls share their inspiration for this single. ”We want people to feel the vibes, to really connect with our music. ‘Gnarly’ feels true to us — it’s bold, it’s fun, and it shows a different side of what we’re about. It feels good to share more of that as we grow alongside the EYEKONS,” referring to the group’s fandom name.

As the EYEKONS fandom tunes in, critiques are rolling out. “I have never seen a comment section that is brutally honest about the song,” a fan added to the single’s YouTube comment section. Most opinions span the lyrics of “Gnarly,” signifying that singles like “Touch” are more fitting to the group. “These girls are super talented; they deserve better,” another added. The most asked question, however, is “Who wrote ‘Gnarly’ by KATSEYE?”

Despite the mixed response, KATSEYE’s fandom rightfully isn’t wavering, citing admiration for their icons and excitement for their next release.

On the night of the launch, the girl group hilariously responded to the feedback in a TikTok video. “You’re not going to get the song the first time you hear it. After a second and third time, you’re going to be like ‘Woah, what is this?!”
