Hattie Crowther Drops "More Pints Than Paycheques" Shirts to Critique Gender Inequalities

An important reminder that “Visibility alone isn’t victory.”

With all eyes on the Women’s Euros, many are bringing up the ongoing inequalities that women face in the game. Emerging designer Hattie Crowther is one of them, responding with a collection of one-off shirts to platform her critique and increase visibility.

While women’s football reaches newfound levels of exposure, the structural issues remain mostly unresolved. Crowther’s capsule addresses the problems of unequal pay and exclusionary policies surrounding trans athletes through one-of-one reconstructed shirts. Using deadstock Ralph Lauren pieces and combining them with discarded football kits, the collection displays a visual hybrid of fashion and football that asks the important questions through reimagined text-based slogans.

One sponsor of the game, Heineken, is paired with the slogan, “More Pints Than Paycheques,” to address pay inequalities. The official tournament crest is also reworked to read “All Women” and incorporates the trans flag to address the FA’s recent ban on trans women competing in elite football.

Behind the collection is a team of women footballers and creatives who are all committed to initiating change within the game. The campaign is shot by photographer Anna Brooks, founder of women’s football collective Leon FC, which champions creativity and expression within the game. As stated in a press release, the capsule “is a reminder that visibility alone isn’t victory.” Using football’s own language, Crowther calls for something fairer and louder.

To support tangible change, 10% of all sales from the collection will be donated to TRUK United FC, a trans-inclusive football club supporting access to the game.

The collection is available now via the Hattie Crowther website.
