This NY Art Exhibit Is Inspired by Lana Del Rey

Here’s everything you need to know.

Curator Eden Deering announces the “Hope is a dangerous thing” art exhibition.

Inspired by the final track of Lana Del Rey’s 2019 studio album, Norman F-cking Rockwell!, Hope is a dangerous thing, the group show highlights each artist’s personal connection to pop music. From delusions of grandeur to their love of escapism, pop stars embody the essence of audacity. For this group show, Deering encouraged each artist to tap into their most “Exaggerated, ambitious, and passionate” selves. “Each work understands its own delusions of grandeur and yet persists because something tells us it matters,” according to the press release.

On display until July 11, the exhibit features artists Kyle Dunn, Raque Ford, Paul Kopkau, Diane Severin Nguyen, Kayode Ojo, Marianna Simnett and Robin F. Williams. The unapologetically theatrical show blends camp humor with emotive paintings, installations, videos and more. Each revels in “their own extravagance and the embarrassment of self-invention.” Like the “imperfect and enigmatic pop icon herself, they are completely genuine and totally fake, extremely personal and entirely vague.”

If it’s been a while since your last listen, the 2019 song’s lyrics read, “Don’t ask if I’m happy… You know that I’m not… But, at best, I can say I’m not sad… ‘Cause hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have…” Through this group show, Deering examines the tension between vulnerability and performance.

Take a peek at the exhibit above and visit P·P·O·W Gallery in New York until July 11.
