Sydney Sweeney Is Unrecognisable as Boxing Champion Christy Martin

The actress stuns with a powerful body transformation for her new role.

Sydney Sweeney is set to take on her most transformative role as champion boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic Christy. Far from the romance and glamour of her previous work in Euphoria and Anyone But You, the film follows Martin’s legendary boxing career alongside domestic abuse and addiction.

Directed by David Michôd and co-produced by Sweeney, the film also includes direct involvement from Martin herself. Seeing the extreme physical and emotional transformation from Sweeney in newly released images, the awards buzz is already beginning, alongside fans sharing their reactions, praising the transformation with one fan commenting, “This transformation is akin to Charlize Theron in Monster.”

Martin was one of the first women to gain recognition in the male-dominated sport, and her story became a serious turning point for boxing. The film covers the highs and lows both inside and outside the ring, from championships to near-death experiences. It is a film of grit, balancing both personal trauma with physical strength.

Sweeney reportedly spent months training to build the muscle and frame of the boxer, saying to W Magazine, “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in early September, with a global release date still to be announced.
