Day-to-Night Dressing Is Easy in Sophia Wilson's Seasonal Essentials

Hypebae’s Seasonal Essentials series rounds up some of the biggest tastemakers, influencers and style enthusiasts, giving them the opportunity to share some of their top fashion tips with our community. With fall in full swing and colder days ahead, it’s officially Dr. Martens season. We looked to visionary photographer Sophia Wilson to give us some inspiration on how to style our Docs for the new season.
Wilson’s style is a reflection of her art – feminine with grungy elements and soft finishes. Her outfits are vibrant and full of life, anchored by statement colors and flouncing skirts. The color is key to perfecting a Sophia Wilson outfit, forming a part of her identity and the way she expresses herself from a young age. “I’ve always loved dressing colorfully, even when I was little, and I just don’t ever want to lose that part of myself.”
When she’s on set, expect a good, sturdy pair of Dr. Martens to be on her feet at all times, especially when she’s shooting on location because “they’re really durable, and I never know what I’m about to get myself into.”
This season, her newest essential is the 8065 Mary Jane in Crazy Horse Leather. The brown leather shoes feature double straps and D-shaped buckles, with an upper that can withstand even the longest days and toughest sets to navigate.
These shoes aren’t solely for creating in Wilson’s mind, though. She dresses them up from day to night with small accents that express her big personality. Her biggest tip for elevating your pair? “When I want to go out, I dress up my Dr. Martens by putting little charms on them, or I wear really fun, colorful socks or accessories like an anklet.”
Styling her Mary Janes with a pink trench and fuzzy, blue and white-striped scarf by day, and a hot pink mini skirt and teal socks for the nighttime, Wilson’s style and sense of self shines through in every look, with a little help from Dr. Martens’ bouncing soles.
