What Is a Bebot and Why Is Everyone on TikTok Turning Into One?

Y2K makeup is rampant on TikTok, so it’s no surprise that a new beauty trend inspired by the 2000s is overtaking our feeds. However, unlike past trends we’ve seen on the platform, the bebot makeup trend directly references Filipino culture in the Y2K era — specifically, the concept of a bebot, or the Tagalog saying for “hot chick.”
After being featured in Black Eyed Peas‘ 2005 song “Bebot,” the term and synonymous anthem became a symbol of the Filipino-American diaspora. As a Filipino-American himself, Apl.de.ap of Black Eyed Peas used the song to pay homage to his Filipino heritage. While “Bebot” was already loved among the Filipino community during its release in the early 2000s, it’s only recently that TikTok rediscovered the song.

Referencing the concept of a Y2K, sunkissed, Filipino “hot chick,” the bebot makeup trend makes use of nostalgic beauty details: a glittery smokey eye, nude glossy lips and voluminous hair. Although the trend specifically speaks to Filipino features like brown skin, dark hair and sultry brown eyes, it’s been executed by beauty lovers of all ethnicities and backgrounds.
