Zendaya Is in Her Short Hair Era

We spoke to the star’s hairstylist about her new look.

Zendaya traded in her signature long hair for a short, ear-length haircut her hairstylist Ursula Stephen is calling “a convertible cut.” While the star officially debuted the look at Paris Fashion Week earlier this month, she’s been styling it a plethora of new ways — and Stephen tells Hypebae she has no plans to grow it out anytime soon.

According to Zendaya’s hairstylist, short hair has been a constant topic of discussion. Although the star sported a classic, sleek bob at the premiere of her upcoming film The Drama and a chic side part at the Oscars executed with ghd products, Stephen says that Zendaya’s specific haircut isn’t exactly your usual bob. “It’s not actually a bob. I’m trying to figure out a name — as it can really be so many things. It’s almost like a dress you can wear many ways,” she says.

Beyond that, Stephen notes that the main inspiration for Zendaya’s look was a haircut that suited all of her moods. “Z wanted a cut that would work with her natural texture and also offer versatility. When it’s in its natural state it doesn’t [look like a] bob. It kinda reads as a bixie,” she tells Hypebae. While fans began to speculate that the haircut was teasing an upcoming project, Stephen confirms that it was the actor’s personal choice to change it up.
