John Galliano Is Going High Street With... Zara?
From Maison Margiela to mass market, we did not see this coming.
For fashion’s latest play in collapsing the space between luxury and the high street, John Galliano is stepping into Zara’s world and we must admit, we did not see this one coming.
Two years after exiting Maison Margiela following a decade-long tenure, the designer isn’t returning to another heritage house. Instead, he’s linking with one of the biggest names in mass-market fashion. As part of a two-year partnership, Galliano will deliver exclusive seasonal drops that rework Zara’s archives through his signature lens of drama and reconstruction.
“Mr. Galliano will be working directly with garments from Zara’s past seasons, deconstructing and reconfiguring them into new seasonal expressions and creations,” the brand shared in a statement. The collaboration opens Galliano up to a broader, global audience, one far beyond the traditional luxury consumer, while giving Zara a new layer of cultural and creative credibility. But it’s not without risk for both sides.
Galliano’s past controversies continue to cast a significant shadow, known for alienating parts of the fashion community; at the same time, Zara’s fast-fashion positioning raises questions about how this partnership might affect the designer’s legacy and credibility. Is it selling out? Is it the future? Either way, fashion fans are confused.
Zara has been steadily refining its fashion authority through a series of calculated collaborations, tapping names like Soshiotsuki, Ludovic de Saint Sernin and Studio Nicholson to elevate its offering. Galliano, however, marks a new level entirely. The first John Galliano x Zara collection is set to land in September 2026, so stay tuned for updates as we’ll be watching this one closely.
