Lola Tung Is Starring in a Sapphic Soccer Rom-Com
The summer she turned into a soccer star.
Lola Tung is in her Bend it Like Beckham era. The Summer I Turned Pretty star’s newest project has just been revealed, and this one is for all the soccer-loving girls out there.
Produced by World Cup champion and former USWNT star Kelly O’Hara, Tung is the lead in the sapphic soccer romantic comedy Ripe!, based off of a short film that follows the rivalry-turned-romance between an American exchange student and a local Spanish player. O’Hara had posted videos of Tung training alongside her, much to the confusion of her followers, but now it all makes perfect sense.
Filling a void in the industry — movies about women’s soccer, lesbians and the two together — Tung’s new role is about to be a cult favorite. The film’s Instagram already boasts a following close to 30,000, providing updates, photo dumps and on-location behind-the-scenes content.
With Emily Bader starring in Netflix’s 99ers film later this year, women’s soccer is getting its big moment on the silver screen in the build-up to next year’s Women’s World Cup. Which actress is going to take her talents to the pitch next?
