The First Céline Handbag Designed by Hedi Slimane Is Here
It’s no Trapeze, but it’s Hedi.
In less than a month, Hedi Slimane is slated to present his first-ever collection for the previously Phoebe Philo-helmed Céline during Paris Fashion Week. Now, prior to his runway debut for the French brand, the designer has unveiled his first Céline handbag with a little help from singer and longtime friend, Lady Gaga.
Photos of Gaga carrying said bag first appeared on fashion journalist Pierre A. M’Pelé’s Instagram. The pop queen herself has also taken to her account to show off her new arm candy. According to The Business of Fashion, Tom Eerebout, who’s the stylist of the Joanne star, has confirmed that the leather handbag is one of Slimane’s first creations for Céline. “He gifted her the bag and it’s the first one from his new collection,” Eerebout tells BoF. The bag is said to be part of the upcoming runway collection.
Following reports that the beloved, Philo-designed Trapeze bag will be discontinued, many are curious to see what the brand’s new artistic, creative and image director will be delivering. In true Slimane fashion, the carryall is constructed with sleek, black leather and sees a single top handle and gold hardware. Gaga’s version comes with a hanging luggage tag personalized with a “L.G.” stamp. Under the Instagram comments section, a few has pointed out that the design is reminiscent of Hermès‘ Kelly Bag.
Those who’ve been following the work of both Slimane and Gaga will know that the two has been collaborating closely from years ago. Back in 2009, Slimane was in charge of shooting the album cover of the singer-songwriter’s record, The Fame Monster. During Slimane’s time at Saint Laurent, Gaga was also supportive of his designs, and was notably the first celebrity to don a full look from the brand’s Spring/Summer 2013 range.
