Model Mama Cax Dies at the Age of 30
She was a cancer survivor and activist for inclusivity within the fashion industry.
Known for being a vocal advocate for inclusivity within the fashion industry, Mama Cax was respected for her activism and ability to instigate introspection among designers and the way that they create clothes for people beyond the runway. After suffering several health concerns for a week, her family announced this past Friday via social media that Mama had passed away.
Born Cacsmy Brutus, the Haitian-American model had been fairly vocal on her Instagram page that she was battling certain symptoms while on location in London for a photoshoot – including “blood clots in her leg, thigh, abdomen and near a filter in her lungs (placed there for cancer treatment in her teens),” according to The Guardian. At the age of 14, Cax had been diagnosed with both bone and lung cancer. After an unsuccessful bone replacement surgery, her right leg was amputated at age 16.
As a cancer survivor, Mama has been a champion for diversity within the fashion industry, promoting messages of both self-love and body positivity. Along with walking in runway shows such as Chromat‘s New York Fashion Week showcase earlier this year in February, the model has also collaborated with brands such as Sephora, Tommy Hilfiger and FENTY.
Our condolences are with everyone affected by the death.
