A Backstage Look at Selam Fessahaye's Star-Studded FW19 Show

Featuring some of Stockholm’s best creative talent.

Stylist and costume designer Selam Fessahaye presented her debut show last season and it was a clear standout on the Stockholm Fashion Week schedule. For Fall/Winter 2019, Fessahaye returned with another star-studded theatrical runway show that served to cement her transition from costume to fully-fledged fashion designer.

While volume and striking silhouettes still formed a key part of this collection, Fessahaye moved from the explosions of tulle and neon highlighter hues this season in search of something with more grandeur. Instead, this season comprised mostly of heavy-looking tapestry fabrics with ornate embroidery and sequinned finishes. Playing with proportion is something Fessahaye does with an air of both elegance and fun; here she showed off her signature elaborate looks through long-line kimono-inspired garments with elongated sleeves, bardot crop tops paired with puffy, dip hem skirts and a new spin on those massively oversized suits she showcased for SS19.

Of course, Fessahaye’s show was just about more than just making a statement through clothing; it’s also a celebration and showcase of diversity in Sweden which is something many Scandinavian brands have traditionally fallen short on championing. The cast of the show included the designer’s friends, musicians and the creative, cool kids of the Stockholm scene like artists AMWIN, Sabina Ddumba, twins Sammy and Johnny Bennett, as well as Caroline Mac and the stunning Lejonhjärta sisters.
