Supreme Dedicates Latest Collaboration to Japanese Erotica Artist, Toshio Saeki
A three-piece capsule developed with the late creative prior to his passing.
Continuing its lineup of Fall/Winter 2020 collaborations including The North Face and The Smurfs, Supreme has now unveiled its team-up with Japanese erotica artist Toshio Saeki. The three-piece capsule was developed prior to the late artist’s death back in January.
Also known as the “Godfather of Japanese Erotica,” Osaka-born Saeki began his creative career with handmade kamishibai (picture cards) and illustrations, later incorporating his style into erotic shunga drawings that he gifted his friends. Fusing Japanese folklore with Shinto spirits, gore, mischief, violence and humor, Saeki took inspiration from samurai-period films and Yakuza B-movies to create transgressive works.
The collaborative capsule features three pieces – a work jacket, hoodie and pants that are emblazoned with some of the artist’s most iconic works. Although unfinished, the collection aptly highlights the late creative’s both colorful and monochromatic drawings. His 2018 piece Ureshi Daruma takes the spotlight on the back of the hoodie, while more illustrations are stitched with raw white edges onto black and blue jackets and trousers.
