Although a handful of unsavory words certainly come to mind when one reflects on the past year, beauty and self-care was a pocket of hope for many. From taking the extra time to indulge on that 80-step skincare routine, or to embrace the concept of “now or never” by finally accepting that now is the time to cut your own hair, plenty of individuals in lockdown found new and imaginative ways to explore the world of beauty from the comfort of their own homes. As the year starts to draw to a close, we now take a look back at some of Google‘s top trending searches of 2020 in the United States for “Beauty How To’s” (to note, the data acquired represents “trending” topics that had a significant spike in traffic over a sustained period in 2020 as compared to 2019).
As shown in the list below, many of the top trending searches are related to hair styling, whether it be a tutorial on how to cut bangs or how to color your hair from home. Other standout trends also include “How to dermaplane” – which is the removal of the top layer of skin in order to reveal new cells underneath for a rejuvenated, glowing complexion – and “How to wash your hands” (no doubt fuelled by COVID-19 fears, but I daresay is a bit concerning nonetheless).
