Facebook Is Now Called "Meta"

The company is expanding beyond social media and diving into virtual reality.

Facebook has announced that it is now called “Meta” as part of a major rebranding. The change comes shortly after a former employee shared a series of negative stories about the company.

Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, the company will now expand beyond social media as it dives into areas such as virtual reality. The name change won’t affect its platforms including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

“Meta’s focus will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses,” Meta’s blog post reads. “The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world.”

As explained, the “metaverse” is a virtual world where people can communicate with one another (similar to the online space in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One). “Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards,” Zuckerberg shared in a virtual conference.

You can head over to Meta’s official website to learn more about the metaverse and rebranding.
