Adidas and Allbirds Launch the World's Lowest Carbon Footprint Running Shoe
To be followed by four additional colorways in Spring 2022.
Eight months ago, adidas debuted FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT, low-carbon performance footwear that can be made at scale. The concept comes to life with a collaboration with Allbirds, making for one of adidas’ lightest models to date.
The design is inspired by the “art of reduction,” offering runners everything they need and nothing more. Inspired by the tangram principle, pieces of the shoe were treated like a puzzle and fit together to minimize waste and carbon emissions.
The Allbirds x adidas FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is based on the LIGHTSTRIKE midsole, but implements bio-based sugarcane made in part with natural materials. The upper mixes 77% recycled polyester with 23% natural Tencel, a material made from wood pulp. The low-carbon construction extends to the 10% recycled rubber outsole and even into the reimagined packaging.
