'Squid Game' Sequel Takes Dramatic Departure From First Season
The new installment to the hit show explores the emotional aftermath of the deadly games.
Fans of the hit Netflix show Squid Game can rejoice — Season 2 is well on its way. The second installment of the grisly television series will reportedly explore the vulnerable side of main character Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae who was last seen exiting a boarding plane to confront the creators of the gruesome game.
“I’m not really in the right place to be discussing Season 2 in an official setting,” admits Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Squid Game, in a virtual Entertainment Weekly panel. He continues, “in the first season we saw Gi-hun is a character whose humanity is shown through or exposed in certain situations. In other words, his humanity is shown through a very passive manner. But I would think that in the second season, what he has learned from the games and his experience in the first season, they will all be put to use in a more active manner.”
Regardless of the show’s violent nature, it has undoubtedly been a pioneer for representation and introducing the world to Korean actors. “The fact that something we prepared for a long time and showcased to the world in the Korean language and filled with Korean culture,” he says, “the fact that this was loved by so many around the world and so many people related to it, that was something I’m really proud of.”
Season 1 of Squid Game is available to watch on Netflix.
