Hollywood Icon Betty White Dies at 99

Just a few weeks before her 100th birthday.

Betty White, dubbed U.S. television’s Golden Girl, died on December 31, 2021, just two weeks before her 100th birthday.

The Hollywood icon started her career in acting and modeling the late ’30s. However, due to the Second World War, she had to put everything on hold and worked with the American Women’s Voluntary Services. After the war, the pioneer of early TV landed her own radio show titled The Betty White Show. In 1949, she became Al Jarvis’ co-host on Hollywood on Television, a variety talk show that was based in Los Angeles.

While co-hosting Hollywood on Television, White co-founded Bandy Productions with writer George Tibbles and producer Don Fedderson. The trio created a selection of series, including Life with Elizabeth, which starred White as Elizabeth and earned her her first Emmy Award nomination for best TV actress in 1951. “[George] wrote and I produced,” White shared. “I was one of the first women producers in Hollywood.”

Over the course of her eight-decade career, White worked on shows like CBS’ The Mary Tyler Moore Show, NBC’s The Golden Girls and TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland. The actress also starred in the 2009 rom-com The Proposal and hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2010.

White was certainly a trailblazer and will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.
