Balenciaga's Summer 2023 Showcase Exposed Fashion's Muddy Reality
Fake babies, mudslides and Ye walking the runway. What’s not to love?
Guests were invited to this season’s Balenciaga showcase at Paris Fashion Week via a “lost” wallet once belonging to a Natalia Antunes. This cryptic invite set the scene for what was about to take place, which later was revealed to be “The Mud Show” starring Ye as its main character.
Guests like Christine Quinn, Kylie Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and North West were unsurprisingly in attendance, while the showcase itself took place in a warehouse pretty much dripping in mud. As models gingerly paraded down the murky runway, guests were treated to visuals of oversized bomber jackets, fake babies as accessories and an eclectic mix of baggy silhouettes.
In the show’s notes, Demna explains (or rather, doesn’t) that he’s “decided to no longer explain my collections and verbalize my designs, but to express a state of mind… The set of this show is a metaphor for digging for the truth and being down to earth. Let us let everyone be anyone and make love, not war.”
