Shakira Seemingly References Her Breakup With Gerard Piqué in the "Monotonía" Music Video
The heartbroken musician tears up with the emotional lyrics.
Shakira is embracing vulnerability in her new music video for her latest single, “Monotonía,” featuring Ozuna.
The singer seems to be alluding to her past relationship with Gerard Piqué, whom she shares two sons with. “It wasn’t your fault nor mine/ It was monotony’s fault,” she sings as she cries. “I never said anything, but it hurt me/ I knew this would happen.”
Additionally, the video features the singer with her heart literally ripped out of her chest, further hinting to her recent heartbreak.
News of the former couple’s split broke in June after 11 years together. In September, she spoke publicly about the breakup for the first time. “It’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it,” Shakira told Elle at the time. “And because I’m in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation. And so, it’s been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult.”
She added, “I think everyone has their own processes or their own mechanisms to process grief or stress or anxiety. We all go through stuff in life. But in my case, I think that writing music is like going to the shrink, only cheaper. It just helps me process my emotions and make sense of them. And it helps me to heal.”
