'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Releases Its First-Ever Teaser Trailer
And Mario, voiced by Chris Pratt, has an American accent.
UPDATE (October 6, 2022): The first-ever official teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been released, unveiling some of your favorite video game characters’ voices.
The preview starts out with a first look at Bowser, voiced by Jack Black, as he and his army are about to get attacked by penguins with snowballs — well, sort of. Then, we see Mario appear out of nowhere, falling from the sky and landing onto Mushroom Kingdom and it is there where we get to finally hear his voice.
Mario, who is voiced by Chris Pratt, appears to be American, which may be confusing to some fans, who have always been led to believe he, along with his brother Luigi (Charlie Day), are Italian. However, in 2020, Masayuki Uemura, who was a Nintendo engineer from 1971 to 2004, revealed Mario’s true ethnicity — at least during the time of the character’s creation.
“Super Mario Bros. isn’t set in Japan, but the character’s Japanese. The name Mario sounds Italian, but he isn’t Italian. They were really able to capture that ambiguity,” Uemura told Kotaku.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is slated to hit theaters on April 7, 2023. Watch the first teaser trailer above and scroll below for more info.
