Jennifer Lopez Reflects on Ben Affleck Heartbreak From Nearly 20 Years Ago

“I honestly felt like I was going to die,” she admits.

Jennifer Lopez may have gotten her happy ending with Ben Affleck, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t filled with some challenging times. The singer recently reflected on the heartbreak she experienced when she and the actor called off their engagement in 2004.

“Dude, I wouldn’t even perform these records,” she told Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe while discussing her 2002 album This Is Me… Then and her upcoming LP This Is Me… Now. “It was so painful after we broke up. Once we called off that wedding 20 years ago, it was the biggest heartbreak of my life. I honestly felt like I was going to die. It sent me on a spiral for the next 18 years where I just couldn’t get it right. But now, 20 years later, it does have a happy ending. It has the most would-never-happen-in-Hollywood ending.”

Affleck and Lopez announced their split in January 2004. By June 2004, she had tied the knot with Marc Anthony, whom she welcomed twins, Emme and Max, with. The former couple then split in 2014 after 10 years of marriage. In 2017, she began dating Alex Rodriguez, whom she was then engaged to from 2019 until their split in April 2021. That same month, she began hanging out with Affleck again. The two made their relationship Instagram official in July 2021. One year later, they finally tied the knot.
