The Venue

Guests flew to Cairo, Egypt to witness Kim Jones’ latest collection for Dior Men. The show wasn’t just at any venue — the “Dior Tears” capsule with Tremaine Emory in the new Grand Egyptian Museum, which is set to open to the public in 2023. The night after, the Pre-Fall 2023 collection was staged in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Dunecore Reigns Supreme

One of the key trends spotted on Jones’ latest runway was dunecore, with a series of looks featuring garments and silhouettes reminiscent of the film Dune. Comprised of 75 looks, which symbolize the 75th anniversary of the Parisian house, the range was largely dressed in a color palette of ivory and pale gray, while models walked out in flowy silhouettes. Mesh outer layers highlighted suits, jackets and coats, and wrap skirt-pant hybrids were paired with high-cut boots. “I’ve always loved Dune, which was really the first of sci-fi. And we’ve worked with NASA on some of the more technical prints,” Jones told Vogue of the inspiration.

Celestial Influences

In addition to Dune, Jones took inspiration from stars and space for the Pre-Fall 2023 collection. “My interest in ancient Egypt is about the stars and the sky. It’s that fascination with the ancient world and the parallels with what we look at today; what we inherited from them and what we are still learning from the past,” the designer shared in a press release.

“It links to Christian Dior in that sense and by way of his fascination with symbols and superstitions that recur throughout his life and work, one of which is the star,” he continued. “In both the collection and the show there is an idea of ‘guided by the stars’ and what that can entail in many ways. It’s about how the past shapes the future or an idea of the future from the past.” These influences could be seen on sci-fi-like headgear as well as stars and constellations stitched onto knit sweaters.

The Attendees

The Pre-Fall 2023 collection saw a star-studded guestlist, most notably Robert Pattinson and Suki Waterhouse making their red carpet debut as a couple after four years of dating. The Batman star wore an ivory suit set, while the model appeared in a sheer dress. Other guests included Naomi Campbell, Lewis Hamilton, Thomas Doherty, EXO‘s Sehun, Lila Moss and more.
