Is Mindy Kaling Living Her B.J. Novak Fantasy Through 'The Sex Lives of College Girls'?
Bela and Eric, anyone?
This week Mindy Kaling joined The Drew Barrymore Show and spilled the tea on not dating B.J. Novak.
As Season 2 of Kaling’s hit HBO series, The Sex Lives of College Girls continues to garner its cult following, fans have noticed an interesting trend. It seems her subliminal attraction to former castmate, B.J. Novak, from The Office, is also her most loved romance trope, or plotline, in her shows. For example, the dynamic between Indian-American character Bela and Eric, a funny, white aspiring comedian. Are the similarities ringing a bell?
As for Kaling and Novak, the pair dated on and off during filming for The Office, but ultimately, Kaling revealed that they’re “better off as friends,” and that Novak is not someone she’d ever marry.
Barrymore, absolutely not having it continued, “I think I dream of you being the ultimate couple because you seem like best friends, and you’re both so wonderful.” However, Kaling reminded her “We’ve known each other for a long, long time, and I think anyone who’s been friends with someone for 18, 19 years and at one point dated and now doesn’t, they maybe understand this.”
As for what her relationship with ex-boyfriend Novak looks like, he’s not only been friend zoned — but family-zoned. “He loves children, and they’re so attached to him. He’s really part of our family,” Kaling continued.
