Céline Dion Reveals She Has a Rare Neurological Disorder Called Stiff-Person Syndrome
Affecting her everyday life.
Céline Dion has recently announced she’s dealing with a serious health condition — stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. As a result, she has to postpone her European tour.
“While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having,” the singer said in an Instagram video. “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, stiff-person syndrome is “a rare neurological disorder with features of an autoimmune disease. SPS is characterized by fluctuating muscle rigidity in the trunk and limbs and a heightened sensitivity to stimuli such as noise, touch, and emotional distress, which can set off muscle spasms. Abnormal postures, often hunched over and stiffened, are characteristic of the disorder.”
Dion explained that the disorder affects “something like one in a million people.” She also revealed she’s receiving treatment for it. “I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again,” she said. “But I have to admit it’s been a struggle.”
